BEEN TO

Earrings pierce manly ears
Local bodies washed with foreign soaps
Jargon cascades, flying endlessly
A native now a foreigner

Years ago, few years ago
You left our shores full of hope
For a better future. Now you return
Not with a golden fleece
But with foreign gods and breath
You who have shouted from tree tops
That houses stand higher than monuments
Is lost in an endless maze!

Welcome home to mother’s kitchen
Where you have scraped pots and enjoyed
The soups of yesterday that have waited
For you
Welcome home.
